BIG DRAW 2012 THEME

2012 in Lines

Paul Klee’s ‘taking a line for a walk’ is the most famous description of drawing ever made. In 2012, we invite you to explore the preeminence and power of the line by mapping familiar and unfamiliar journeys, or describing your area or region. You could create pictograms to explain highlights or special events, or diagrams to interpret your venue’s collections, exhibitions or unique features. Why not take lines for a walk in architecture or nature, or use them to make linear designs and patterns?

At Big Draw, Big Make, the 2012 national Big Draw launch at the Victoria & Albert Museum on 30 September, we will look at how drawing prompts invention and the design of almost every material object. We will explore its importance in architecture, design, fashion, book illustration and cartooning. You are free to choose any combination of these different fields, or something completely different, to describe 2012 in Lines.

This summer, of course, athletes will be using all their energy to reach the finishing line. You may want to create non-competitive finishing lines in your own building or site to mark the end of a trail of drawing challenges. Or you could use lines to depict movement – at hare or tortoise pace. Better still, you could help participants set their lines in motion by creating simple stop-motion animations or flipbooks.

In schools, community centres or art clubs, you might encourage the use of sketchbooks to record 2012, amalgamating these sketches into a Big Draw visual diary or mural telling the story of 2012 – at least its next six months.
